Adam Slater is a freelance clarinet player and composer with a wide range of interests. As a clarinet player he has worked with orchestras including the Orchestra of Opera North, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Ballet Sinfonia, BBC Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, with whom he has performed at the BBC Proms. He has also worked in session orchestras, including work with Peter Gabriel’s New Blood Orchestra and for film soundtrack recordings. As a chamber musician Adam has performed in venues such as Wigmore Hall, Milton Court Barbican, Barber Institute and at festivals including Lake District Summer Music, HCMF, Little Missenden Festival and London’s Principal Sound Festival.
Adam has a particular interest in contemporary music, covering music from early 20th century modernism to new music of today. He has worked with composers including Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Oliver Knussen, George Benjamin, Simon Holt, Tansy Davies and Christian Mason. Founded in 2011, Adam is the clarinet player of the Octandre Ensemble and has worked with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, with whom he has performed at the BBC Proms, for BBC Radio 3 and NMC Records. Adam has taken part in composition workshops at the Universities of Cambridge, Bristol and Kent and also at Westminster School.
Adam was a student at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, before continuing his studies at the Royal College of Music London. There he completed a Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours and a Master of Performance degree with Distinction, studying with Tim Lines, Richard Hosford, Robert Hill and Barnaby Robson. His studies were kindly supported by the Leverhulme Trust, HR Taylor Trust, and the Craxton Memorial Trust.
